We only get a few Christmases with our children before they’re too old to care - before their eyes no longer swell with joy when they see all the magical lights, before their sweet little hands, reaching to place ornaments on the tree, are no longer so little, and, let’s be honest, before you can finally have the beautifully decorated Christmas tree you’ve always dreamed of. In the meantime, I want to be sure that I remember those big eyes, those tiny hands and the little details of our traditions.
I will say, though, that trying to document the memories AND be present in the moment was almost impossible. Do you know how hard it is to photograph quick moving kids, making sure you don’t miss any sweet moments, while also making sure ornaments aren’t torn apart? My POPD (perfect ornament placement disorder) was in severe overdrive! I wanted to fix everything but I wanted to take adorable photos of my kids! It really would have been nice to have the photos and enjoy the moment...like, you know, hire a photographer or something. ;)
My favorite part of Christmas is by far the Christmas tree! I love the warmth it brings into our living room with the soft white lights. I do have a love/hate relationship with decorating it though. We have a fake tree so having to fluff it is probably the worst part..followed by untangling and wrapping the lights. It never fails! No matter how neatly I put them up at the end of the season, they always end up a tangled mess the following year! What the hell is up with that? It's like there's a light tangling elf that crawls in the attic every year JUST to screw with me!
For the most part, my ornaments coordinate but I do have a few that mean so much to me that I'll never not use them...no matter how bad they may clash. They are Avon teddy bear ornaments that my mom had on our tree when I was a little girl. I remember playing with them before I'd put them on. I would drive the little tricycle, rock the rocking chair, pull the tiny wagon, and so on. When I saw my oldest son playing with the sled, it immediately brought back those same memories! How cool! :)
One of my other favorite decorations is a Santa music box, also from my childhood. I would bring it to my room, when I was younger, and wind it all the way up so I could fall asleep to the tune. If my husband would let me, I'd still do it now! I love the song...but I have no idea what it is! I've heard it before but don't know the name and I can't really describe the tune through words. Although, it could be fun to try! Haha! It goes like... "da da, da da, da-da-da-da-da-da-daaaa, da da-da da da-da-da, da da-da-da-da-da-daaaaa" So if you know what it's called feel free to let me know. *insert laughing face here* :) I love seeing both of my boys sit and listen to the music box in awe. It's awesome that with so much technology these days, that something so simple would amaze them.
I would love to hear what your favorite part of Christmas is and/or your favorite decoration. To see all of our photos and my favorite Santa music box, check out the video below! I hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas season this year!
